Meet the horses

Our gorgeous team of horses and ponies can cater for everyone from complete beginners up to experienced riders.

Finlay

15.3hh

Finn is one of our most dependable riding school horses and has taught countless beginners how to ride. He is steady and sensible but knows how to step it up for our more advanced riders. He has competed in dressage, show jumping, showing and cross country, has been trail hunting and attended riding club camp. He’s our big, loveable giant and we need to work out a way to clone him.

Solomon

15.2hh

Solomon is an older boy now but he is another of our most reliable and trustworthy horses. He is the perfect horse for beginners and nervous riders as he never puts a foot wrong, and he has helped many riders to overcome confidence issues and fall in love with riding again. In his younger days he had lots of fun jumping and trail hunting but is now enjoying a quieter life.

Oakley

16.2hh

Oakley is our yard manager’s personal horse and an absolute superstar. He came from an eventing background and regularly goes out competing across all disciplines, representing our local riding club. He is also a fantastic escort horse for our customer hacks so you may well see him leading the way next time you head out for a ride.

Prince

15.2hh

Prince has been with us since he was just one year old. He’s now all grown up and has become a brilliant part of our team, learning the ropes for lessons and hacks alongside our more experienced horses. We are very excited about his future and we have plans for him to compete in showing classes and hope he will become a fantastic all-rounder!

Oliver

15.1hh

Horses don’t come much better than Oliver! He is a true all-rounder and can turn his hoof to anything – he is fantastic to ride in the school, jump and hack and is perfect for helping our more experienced customers to improve their riding. Oliver has competed in all disciplines, attended riding club camp and rarely comes home without a rosette when he goes out and about.

Alfie

13.2hh

We really wish Alfie was 16hh! He is such a talented pony and excels in dressage, jumping and showing, while also being the perfect riding school pony. He is safe and steady for our beginners but can also take things up a gear and teach more experienced riders so much. Alfie has done just about everything including riding club events, camp and winning junior champion at our local show.

Jack

13.2hh

Jack is just the perfect pony! He is so adaptable and clever, always knowing if he needs to stay steady and look after our beginners, or step it up and jump a clear round. He is a dream to ride in the school and has competed up to Novice level in dressage, so he definitely has the moves! Jack has been to riding club camp, competed in arena eventing and loves going trail hunting.

Mary

14.2hh

Mary is a firm favourite for our riding school customers – she is safe but responsive and fantastic to ride in the school or over jumps. She is also wonderful on a hack and many of our customers ask for her when heading out and about. Before joining our team, Mary did a lot of carriage driving, however more recently she’s been enjoying her dressage and show jumping.

Clover

16.2hh

Clover is Izzy’s horse and she was brought over from Ireland in 2024. She is still very young but has been an absolute superstar so far, already going out to arena eventing, show jumping clinics and hacking in the Wyre Forest. She has an incredible jump and definitely looks to be a star of the future. Clover will often be seen leading hacks and is sometimes used in lessons for our more advanced riders.

Gypsy

13.2hh

Gypsy was very young when she joined our team but she has gone from strength to strength, becoming a fun and forward riding school pony. She has a real ping to her jump, proving that cobs really can! Gypsy particularly loves cross country where her speediness is a big advantage, and she has also tried her hoof at showing, dressage and show jumping.

Socks

15.1hh

Socks joined our team in 2024 and has become a huge asset to the riding school. She is so willing and keen to learn, and has really come on leaps and bounds with her schooling and jumping. She is a forward-going but safe ride and really tries her best at everything she does. So far with us she has been out show jumping and cross-country schooling and has been a dream!

Dolly

13hh

Since coming to Sugarloaf as a two-year-old, Dolly has really grown up and become a great part of our riding school. She was backed and brought on by a member of our team who did a fantastic job with her and she has become a responsive and forward-going pony for our loaners and customers to have fun with. We’re excited to see what she will do in the future!

Poppy

12.2hh

Poppy is one of our most popular ponies with our smaller riders! She is very fun and forward and has an absolutely cracking jump, making her very competitive when we run our loaners’ competitions in the holidays. She has helped lots of our smaller customers to take their riding to the next level and she is always a popular choice on Own A Pony Days.

Baby

12.3hh

Baby has been with us for many years and she’s a very clever pony! She will suss out her rider very quickly and figure out how hard she needs to work. Baby is a brilliant jumper and when partnered with someone who ‘gets her’ she will fly around a jumping course with ease. Baby has competed in ridden showing and has been trail hunting.

Hector

10.2hh

Our resident cutie! Hector is a favourite amongst our smallest riders and his little legs actually have a great jump in them! Like any Shetland he can have his cheeky moments but he is a great pony for tiny tots to start out on. He has competed in show jumping and cross country with some of our more confident small riders.

Henry

11.3hh

Little Henry isn’t the speediest of ponies but he can always be relied on to look after our beginners and help them to master the basics. He enjoys hacking and can sometimes find his speedy side when out and about, and he has been known to enable show-jumper mode – but only when he’s in the mood!

Skye

12hh

Our little unicorn, Skye, is a fantastic kids’ all-rounder. As well as helping our smaller riders learn to ride independently, Skye also excels at jumping and dressage, including some brilliant results in E-Riders online dressage competitions. Skye is such a sweet and gentle pony – no wonder our customers love her.

Gracie

11.3hh

Princess Gracie is one of our longest-serving riding school ponies, having arrived with Daisy many, many years ago. She has been an absolute gem and has taught countless children to ride, as well as having lots of success in showing – including taking reserve junior champion at our local show. Gracie is beginning to wind down to retirement but our beginners may still have the chance to rider her in our lead-rein lessons.

Daisy

11.3hh

Daisy is the other half of our wonder-Welshie duo with Gracie – they are inseparable and sometimes even share a stable! Daisy is a super-safe and steady pony for beginners to learn on and can be trusted to look after our younger riders.

Blaze

12.2hh

Blaze is a fun little pony who joined the team in 2025. Although he’s quite young, he’s a sensible lad and has also been trained to drive – which means he can pull a cart as well as being ridden. He’s been popular with our younger riders so far and we can’t wait to see what more is to come from him!
